Who would have thought? We’ve been charging along for two years now! Eight issues down and many epic sessions recorded forever in digital print!

How good is this? Most issues have been viewed more than 8000 times, and issue 5 hit 16000! Issue 7 is down a bit ‘cos we were a bit slack and didn’t promote it as usual. Still, we’re blown away by how many people are reading throughout the world. We’re so stoked to be taking NZ bodyboarding to the masses!

A year ago we lamented on the lack of shots coming to us from the North Island. Eight issues down and nothing’s improved…actually, we now have published more shots of Kiwi boogs overseas than in the North Island…and that count includes North Island empties (we don’t run empty shots from overseas). Two thirds of NZ’s population lives in the North Island, and the majority of bodyboarders too. So what’s going on North Islanders? Get ya camera out and start shooting!

Riders

Sam Wells takes the ‘photo slut’ crown, rising from third place a year ago. 34 photos of Wellsy have graced the digital pages of ISOmag so far. A total of 77 riders have found ISOmag glory so far, though half of them have only appeared once, and only seven riders have appeared more than ten times.

Photogs

Take a close look at the graph below…this doesn’t bode well for the future of ISOmag. Well more than half of the shots have been taken by Gardy and Ryno. Both of us have day jobs and plenty else on our plates, so I’m not sure how long we can keep it up. We would LOVE it if a few more people stepped up to the plate and took some of the weight off our shoulders! My goal for ISOmag is to have a number of photographers throughout the country contributing equally. Then, if one of us can’t keep up with the shooting, the mag won’t fall over.

This graph tells a sad story, symptomatic of the state of the sport in the country. Seems that very few people are doing good stylish boosts these days, well not caught on camera anyway. We would love to print more boost shots, but ya gotta get out there and do them fellas!

Week Two/Three

It’s been a week since the last update so here’s a selection of photos over that time. Nothing new has happened really, just more of the same. Although it did rain one day which apparently hardly ever happens here. There’s plenty of swell in the forecast for this coming week and when a 2m 15 second period swell gives you waves in the 5ft+ range I’d say there will be a fair few waves to be had.

Just added a few more shots from the last few days, the swells pulsing in and the winds are looking good. 4:30am roadie down south in the morning to see what we can find…

Travel

Well, it’s been a week now since we arrived (big bro and myself – the designers here at ISOMAG). Took us a good 50+ hours to get here with no sleep, multiple plane flights, train transfers and a few bus trips for good measure. Hopefully picking up the rental car tomorrow which will make life a bit easier, as we have done our fair share of walking.

The sun is shining every day, a 1m swell produces waves over head high, a can of beer costs 50c, if you know where to go it’s always offshore somewhere, apparently playing ping pong naked on the beach is all ok, learnt a few words from the local language but generally we don’t understand a thing that’s going on, made friends with a group of Slovakian girls, hiked through a desert, cut my finger with a bread knife, seen enough old man willy and grandma boobies to sink a ship and lost my GoPro on our second surf.

So all in all it’s been a fairly eventful trip. Heres a few photos from this past week. Who knows what tomorrow will bring…

Summers Gone

Those summer days have well and truly gone here in NZ. The country has been hammered by cold weather recently with claims of snow as far north as Auckland. According to the weather guru’s this hasn’t happened for 80 years! On the other hand the snow has been epic, well that’s if you can get to the ski fields with half the roads in NZ closed. I managed to find my way up the hill last week to be greeted by empty lifts and powder up to my neck. No big deal.

Anyway, as my ear op heals up I should be back in the water early next month so have been flicking through some photos of last summer as I put the next ISOMAG issue together. Enjoy.

I recently rediscovered these absolute gems from my first trip to the South Pacific in winter 2007. These weren’t my efforts even though I was also filming back then, you can actually spot me in the channel in these clips. Unfortunately that footage is no longer as after a drunken night out I returned to my scooter ripped off and camera gone (young and dumb). Got to love Woody’s (Adam Wood) impression of a bird when he kicks his way from the lip….. Also some good pits to Levi Turner! Sit back and enjoy these golden oldies!
